IELTS Band Requirements by Country (2026): What Nepali Students Actually Need

A clear, destination-by-destination breakdown of the IELTS band scores Nepali students need for admissions and visas across Australia, Canada, UK, US, NZ, Germany and Finland.

“What IELTS band do I need?” is the single most-asked question we get at the AECS counselling desk. The truthful answer is “it depends” — on which country, which university, which program, and whether you are talking about admission or about the student visa itself.

This post walks through the actual band thresholds Nepali applicants face in 2026, country by country, separating university-admission bars from visa requirements where they differ. Numbers are verified against destination immigration / education-authority sites as of May 2026 and are updated when AECS becomes aware of material change.

How IELTS scoring works (in 60 seconds)

IELTS is reported on a 1.0 – 9.0 band scale in 0.5 increments. You receive a band for each of the four sections — Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking — plus an Overall band that is the rounded average. Both the per-section (“no band below X”) and the Overall (“X.X overall”) thresholds matter, and universities often list both.

The two variants — IELTS Academic (university admissions and skilled migration) and IELTS General Training (work visas, vocational training, PR pathways for AU / CA / NZ / UK) — share the Listening and Speaking modules. The Reading and Writing modules differ. Check which one your destination expects; submitting the wrong one is a common, avoidable cause of rejection.

For a deeper breakdown of the IELTS format itself, see our IELTS preparation page.

Australia: 6.0 to 7.0 depending on the program

For most undergraduate and postgraduate-coursework programs in Australia, the working threshold is IELTS 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0. That’s the bar at Group of Eight schools (Melbourne, ANU, Sydney, UNSW, Monash, UQ, UWA, Adelaide) and at almost every regional university for international Bachelors and Masters Coursework.

Programs that come with regulated professional outcomes ask for more:

  • Nursing, teaching, medicine, pharmacy — typically IELTS 7.0 overall, with no band below 7.0. The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and the relevant teaching authorities set these thresholds separately from the universities.
  • Law (JD or LLB) — often IELTS 7.0 overall, 6.5+ each band.
  • PhD candidates typically need 7.0 overall at the more selective schools.

The Subclass 500 student visa itself does not impose a higher English bar than the university — it accepts whatever the institution has accepted. Department of Home Affairs assessment focuses on the GTE narrative, financial documentation and academic preparedness.

For skilled-migration pathways post-graduation (Subclass 189 / 190 / 482 / 186), the points table rewards IELTS 7.0+ (“Proficient English”) and 8.0+ (“Superior English”) with material points-test increments.

Canada: SDS minimum is 6.0; some Masters want 6.5+

Canada is unusual because the Student Direct Stream (SDS) sets a visa-side English requirement — IRCC requires IELTS 6.0 overall, with no band below 6.0 for SDS-eligible applications. That is a visa threshold, not a university admission bar.

Universities and public colleges then add their own academic bars on top:

  • Most undergraduate programs — IELTS 6.0 to 6.5 overall, no band below 6.0.
  • Most Masters programs — IELTS 6.5 to 7.0 overall, no band below 6.0 to 6.5.
  • Selective Masters (computer science at UofT, Waterloo CS, McGill MBA) — IELTS 7.0+ overall.

If your university wants 6.5 but SDS wants 6.0, you still need 6.5+ overall — SDS just sets the visa floor, not the admission ceiling. AECS verifies both thresholds for every shortlist before you book the test.

PTE Academic has also been accepted under SDS since 2023 with a 60+ threshold — we cover that in the PTE-vs-IELTS comparison post.

United Kingdom: 6.0 Bachelors, 6.5 Masters, 7.0 for Oxbridge / LSE

For the United Kingdom, the typical bars are:

  • UndergraduateIELTS 6.0 overall, no band below 5.5.
  • MastersIELTS 6.5 overall, no band below 6.0.
  • Oxford, Cambridge, LSE, Imperial, UCLIELTS 7.0+ overall, no band below 6.5–7.0 depending on the program.

The visa-side wrinkle for the UK is UKVI IELTS — a Secure English Language Test (SELT). For most degree-level courses, the university’s own IELTS Academic score is sufficient and UKVI IELTS is not required. For pre-sessional English programs, foundation courses or visa-direct routes, UKVI IELTS is mandatory. AECS checks which version your specific CAS requires before you book.

For Nepali applicants, a credibility interview at UKVI Kathmandu is also part of the process — and IELTS Speaking sub-score plays into how the interviewer reads your spoken English.

New Zealand: same as Australia, broadly

For New Zealand — the eight universities and the Fee-Paying Student Visa — typical bars are:

  • UndergraduateIELTS 6.0 overall, no band below 5.5.
  • MastersIELTS 6.5 overall, no band below 6.0.
  • Nursing, teaching, regulated professionsIELTS 7.0+ overall.

Immigration New Zealand assesses applications on academic, financial and intent criteria; the English score travels with the university offer.

United States: 6.5 typical, 7.0+ for top-30

The United States is the most variable because the 600+ universities each set their own thresholds. As a working rule for Nepali applicants:

  • Mid-tier private universities and state flagshipsIELTS 6.5 overall, no band below 6.0.
  • Top-30 universities (Ivy League, Stanford, MIT, Berkeley, UCLA, NYU)IELTS 7.0 to 7.5+ overall.
  • PhD programs — often IELTS 7.0+ even at mid-tier schools, because teaching-assistantship duties involve undergraduate instruction in English.

TOEFL iBT is also widely accepted and has slightly different mapping thresholds (79+ at most schools, 100+ at top-30). The Duolingo English Test is now accepted at 5,500+ US institutions including the Ivy League — more on that in the test-comparison post.

The F-1 visa interview at the US Embassy in Kathmandu does not require a specific IELTS band, but a confident, articulate spoken response in the 3-minute interview is what gets the application across the line. Speaking sub-score practice is therefore important regardless of the written bar.

Germany: 6.0 to 6.5 for English-medium, APS Certificate required

For Germany, English-medium Masters programs at TU Munich, RWTH Aachen, KIT, TU Berlin and the rest typically require:

  • IELTS 6.0 to 6.5 overall for engineering, computer science and life sciences Masters programs taught in English.
  • IELTS 6.5+ for selective Masters (Heidelberg, Mannheim economics, LMU Munich biology).

For German-medium programs, TestDaF Level 4+ or DSH-2 is the bar — IELTS won’t satisfy that. AECS counsels you toward English-medium programs unless you have time to commit to B2–C1 German over 12–18 months.

Germany has a hard prerequisite that comes before any university application: the APS Certificate from the German Embassy in New Delhi. Without APS, no German university or visa application will progress. Plan 4–8 weeks for APS processing and start at least 10 months before your target intake.

Finland and EU: 5.5 to 6.5 depending on program

For Finland, the typical bar is IELTS 6.0 to 6.5 overall, no band below 5.5 to 6.0. Aalto, Helsinki and Tampere lead the English-medium space; tuition scholarships of 30–100% are common for international applicants with strong academic records.

For Hungary under Stipendium Hungaricum or self-funded routes, IELTS 5.5 to 6.0 is sufficient for most English-medium programs — bumped to 6.5+ for medicine and dentistry at Semmelweis or Debrecen.

For Malta, IELTS 5.5 to 6.0 at University of Malta and MCAST covers most programs.

South Korea and Japan: 5.5 to 6.5 (with TOPIK / JLPT alternative)

For South Korea, KAIST and POSTECH (English-medium graduate programs) accept IELTS 5.5 to 6.5. SNU graduate programs typically require IELTS 6.5+. The Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) provides Korean language training, so the IELTS bar is often the only English requirement.

For Japan, English-medium programs at the University of Tokyo (G30), Kyoto (KUINEP) and Tohoku (FGL) require IELTS 6.0 to 6.5. MEXT awardees who choose Japanese-medium programs get free 1-year Japanese language training as part of the scholarship.

Working backwards from your destination

If you already know the destination and program type, your IELTS target is fixed. Here’s the practical sequence we counsel at AECS:

  1. Confirm the program’s exact IELTS requirement — not just “around 6.5”, but “6.5 overall, no band below 6.0” or whatever the actual line is.
  2. Run a diagnostic mock in your first week of prep. Your current band tells you honestly how many weeks of work stand between you and the target.
  3. Add 0.5 band as a safety margin. Universities sometimes raise the threshold between application cycles; arriving with the exact bar leaves you no headroom.
  4. Plan the visa-side requirement separately if your destination has one (SDS for Canada, UKVI SELT for some UK routes).
  5. Test booking — when you’re ready. Most students sit IELTS between 4 and 10 weeks of joining a structured prep cycle. Booking too early to “see how it goes” is one of the most common reasons applicants need a second sitting.

For the full prep approach we run at AECS, see the IELTS preparation page — Computer-Delivered and Paper-Based, both with weekly writing reviews and recorded speaking simulations.
