New Zealand offers eight universities — all eight ranked in the world's top 500 by QS / THE — and a clear, post-study work visa that delivers up to 3 years of open work authorisation after graduation. For Nepali students who want the Australian-style outcome at a smaller, calmer scale, NZ is the alternative.
The Fee-Paying Student Visa is processed offshore from the Immigration New Zealand mission in New Delhi (Nepal is administered through India). Decision times average 4–8 weeks for genuine, well-documented applications. NZ uses a "genuine student" framework similar to Australia's GTE — your application is assessed on academic preparedness, financial capacity, and intent.
NZ's post-study Work Visa was reformed in November 2022 to favour higher-level qualifications: a Bachelors or Masters Coursework now grants up to 3 years of open work; a Level 7 Graduate Diploma grants 1–2 years. Intakes
February (Semester 1, main intake — applications open August) and July (Semester 2 — applications open April). Some Masters programs offer rolling intakes. AECS recommends starting 7–9 months before the target intake.
INZ uses NZD 20,000 as the minimum living-cost declaration. Students can work 20 hours per week during semester and full-time during scheduled breaks. NZ's minimum wage is NZD 23.15 / hour (2024) — among the world's highest, which helps part-time work cover a meaningful share of living costs. Scholarships of NZD 5,000–20,000 are common at the 8 universities for high-academic international applicants.

How long is the NZ post-study work visa now?
Up to 3 years for Bachelors and Masters Coursework graduates (changed in Nov 2022, removing the previous "Open" / "Employer-assisted" split). Masters Research and PhD graduates get 3 years regardless of program length. Level 7 Graduate Diplomas get 1–2 years. -
Is NZ easier or harder than Australia for a Nepali student?
Roughly the same difficulty for visa approval, but NZ has fewer universities (8 vs 40+) so program choice is narrower. NZ's smaller scale also means a more personal student experience and arguably stronger pastoral care under the Code of Practice. Australia wins on PR pathway breadth; NZ wins on cost and simplicity. -
Can my spouse work while I study in NZ?
Yes — if you're enrolled in a Masters / PhD or a Level 9–10 qualification, your spouse qualifies for an Accompanying Partner of Student work visa, valid for the duration of your study, open work in any field. -
What IELTS score do I need?

Tuition is comparable (NZD 26,000–50,000 vs AUD 22,000–50,000), and the NZD trades slightly below the AUD. Living costs in Auckland are similar to Sydney, but Christchurch / Dunedin / Hamilton are markedly cheaper. NZ's NZD 23.15 minimum wage helps the net cost equation considerably.
