Japan has long been one of Asia's premier study destinations — University of Tokyo, Kyoto University, Osaka and Tohoku rank consistently in the world's top 100, and the MEXT (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship from the Japanese Government fully funds international students across Bachelors, Masters and PhD levels.
For non-Japanese-speaking applicants, the most accessible pathway is now English-medium Masters and PhD programs at the top research universities — Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Tohoku, Tokyo Tech, Nagoya, Hokkaido. AECS counsels these programs alongside MEXT and university-direct scholarships of 30–100%.
The Japanese Student Visa is unusual in requiring a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) first — issued by the Japanese Immigration Services Agency in 1–3 months. The COE is sponsored by the receiving university and proves your purpose of stay. Once issued, the Student Visa is granted within 5–10 working days at the Japanese Embassy in Kathmandu.

- IELTS 6.0–6.5+ for English-medium programs. PTE 56+ widely accepted. Some Masters require TOEFL iBT 79+.

- JLPT N2+ for Japanese-medium programs (some Masters require N1). English-medium programs typically do not require Japanese.
- COE
- Certificate of Eligibility — sponsored by the receiving university, issued by Japan Immigration in 1–3 months. The COE is the visa prerequisite.

Intakes

National university tuition is regulated and consistent — JPY 535,800 / year (about USD 3,500 / NPR 4.5 lakh). Private universities cost 1.5–3× this. MEXT awardees pay nothing. University-direct scholarships of 30–100% are common for high-academic applicants — Tokyo G30 and Kyoto KUINEP routinely fully waive tuition. Students can work 28 hours per week during semester and 40 hours during scheduled breaks; hourly minimums vary by prefecture (JPY 1,000–1,200 in 2024).

What is the Certificate of Eligibility (COE)?
A document issued by Japan Immigration Services that pre-approves your purpose of stay in Japan. Your receiving university sponsors and applies for the COE on your behalf, typically taking 1–3 months. Once you have the COE, you go to the Japanese Embassy in Kathmandu and the visa is issued in 5–10 working days. -

National university tuition is JPY 535,800 / year — about NPR 5 lakh. Living costs in Tokyo land at JPY 1.2–1.5M / year (NPR 12–15 lakh). Can I work and stay in Japan after graduation?
Yes — Designated Activities (Job Hunting) visa allows 6 months extendable to 1 year to find a Japanese job. Once you receive an offer you convert to a Working Visa (Engineer / Specialist in Humanities / International Services). Japan grants permanent residency after 10 years of legal residence; high-skilled professionals can qualify after 1–3 years on the Highly Skilled Professional visa.
