The United States hosts more Nepali students than any other country, and that figure has grown every year since 2018. Six of the world's top ten universities are American (THE 2025), and OPT (Optional Practical Training) plus STEM OPT extension can deliver up to 3 years of post-graduation work authorisation in your field of study.
The US visa process is interview-driven. Unlike Australia or Canada, where case officers decide on paperwork, a US consular officer at Kathmandu Embassy makes the F-1 decision in a 3-minute window after looking at three things — ties to Nepal, financial capacity, and academic preparedness. Intakes
Fall (August — main, applications close December–January), Spring (January — smaller, applications close September–October), and a small Summer intake. For Fall applications, AECS recommends starting 12–14 months in advance — standardised tests, recommendation letters, essays, and demonstrated need / merit-aid applications all run on overlapping timelines.
Costs at top private universities are partly offset by need-based and merit-based aid — some private universities can cost a low-income Nepali student less than a public state school. F-1 students can work up to 20 hours per week on campus during semester and up to 40 hours during breaks. Off-campus work requires CPT (Curricular Practical Training) or OPT authorisation. Federal minimum wage is USD 7.25, but most college towns pay USD 12–18 / hour for on-campus roles.

How hard is the US F-1 visa to get from Nepal?
Approval rates vary widely by university — Ivy League and top-30 admits have very high approval, mid-tier private universities are mixed, and unknown / for-profit schools are heavily scrutinised. AECS counsels you to pick universities that present a credible academic ladder and to prepare a defensible answer to "why this school, why now, why this program." -
What is OPT and STEM OPT?
Optional Practical Training — up to 12 months of work authorisation in your field after graduation, available to all F-1 students. STEM OPT adds 24 months on top if your degree is on the federal STEM-designated list (most engineering, computer science, math, life sciences). 3 years total work auth is enough to pursue H-1B sponsorship multiple times. -
Do I really need SAT / GRE?
SAT is optional or test-blind at most US undergrad programs in 2026 (post-COVID policy that has largely stuck). GRE has been dropped at most Masters programs except top PhD. How much financial aid can I realistically expect?
Top universities meet 100% of demonstrated need for the small number of internationals they admit. Mid-tier private universities give USD 15,000–35,000 / year in merit scholarships for strong academic profiles. State schools rarely give aid to internationals.
