Study in Germany — the landscape
Germany is the most cost-efficient top-tier study destination available to Nepali students. Most public universities charge zero tuition for international Bachelors and Masters students (with a handful of exceptions in Baden-Württemberg and Saxony-Anhalt). You pay only a "semester contribution" of EUR 150–350 that includes public transport in the university city.
The trade-off is the APS — Akademische Prüfstelle / Academic Evaluation Centre — process. Nepal-based applicants must obtain an APS Certificate from the German Embassy in New Delhi before applying to any university or the visa. APS verifies your academic credentials, takes 4–8 weeks, and is non-trivial. AECS coordinates the APS application as part of the standard package.
Post-graduation Germany offers an 18-month Residence Permit for Job Search, which converts to the EU Blue Card once you have an offer of EUR 45,300+ (2024 threshold, lower for shortage occupations). The EU Blue Card is a fast pathway to permanent residency — 33 months on the card, 21 months if B1 German.
Why study in Germany?
Germany trades a longer paperwork pathway (APS) for a degree that costs almost nothing in tuition.
Tuition-free at public universities
No tuition at most public Bachelors and Masters programs. Semester contribution of EUR 150–350 covers admin and public transport. Tuition fees apply in Baden-Württemberg (EUR 1,500 / semester) and some non-EU Masters.

Students can work 140 full days or 280 half days per year — typically EUR 12–18 / hour minimum wage in 2024. Most German students cover living costs entirely through part-time work after Semester 2.

How long is the post-study job-seeker visa?
